Motion-control shoes are the most rigid, control-orientated running shoes. Designed to limit overpronation (or slow the rate at which a runner overpronates), motion control shoes are generally heavy but very durable.

You need this if:

you are an overpronator who needs control features and places a premium on durability. Overpronation is when the feet roll inward too much.

you wear orthotics and want a firm midsole and deep heel counter

you are a heavy runner who needs extra durability and control

runners with flat feet often do best in motion-control shoes.

Some examples of motion control shoes:

Asics GEL-Evolution

Adidas Supernova GCS

New Balance M992

Stability Shoes

Stability shoes are more flexible than a motion control shoe while providing good support and durability. These shoes are for people who do not have severe motion control problems and mid-weight people.

You need this if:

You want enough stability to keep you running healthy and pain free, without compromising cushioning or adding too much weight.

You want a shoe that can fit an orthotic comfortably and has perhaps more support in the upper to snug-up your instep. Finally, you might want a shoe you can run in every day, as well as an occasional race.

Some example stability shoes:

(…)
4 – The gear- Without a doubt, the most important purchase a runner can make is a goodpair of running shoes. But one person?s perfect is another person’sblister-forming disaster, so do take advice from a specialist retailer.

- You’ll need decent socks. By decent, I mean ones without bulky seamsthat chafe, and with support in the areas of greatest contact. Falke and1,000 Mile both have good ranges.

- Next up, for women only, a sports bra. Even an A cup moves 42mm away fromthe ribcage during impact movement, so every woman needs support. It’s bestto go to a store where you can try on a number of different models, butotherwise check out the huge selection at lessbounce.com.

- A heart rate monitor can’t be considered essential gear, but it’scertainly useful. A good one is the Polar RS200 running-specific model(GBP94.50, polarelectro.co.uk). It’s easy to use, with lots of usefulfeatures – such as a VO2 max test, an interval training option, a lapcounter and a weekly log, plus the option of upgrading it to a speed anddistance monitor by purchasing a foot pod.

- The simplest solution to hydration on the run is to get yourself aRunAid bottle – a plastic bottle that slips around your hand or wrist, andis much easier to carry than a round bottle. It costs from GBP2.50 (pricein the UK) for a 275ml size, and is widely available from running stores orwebsites. For longer distances, a water backpack, such as the Salomon RaidRevo 15 water-carrying pack with feed tube (GBP50, salomonwomenwill.com),will keep your drink cold and accessible throughout your run.
